With issues that are far from fictional, The Rooster Bar by John Grisham hits the mark on a page-turning story that is built upon overwhelming circumstances that are a part of many people’s daily realities… Circumstances that combine situations of great extremes:

  • The high of completing your education only to find yourself buried under exorbitant student loan debt.

  • A lifetime of diligently working to make a new life for your family in America to find your dream swept away in one day as you are caught up in a system that has forgotten its’ own humanity.

John Grisham was inspired to create this story after reading an article entitled "The Law-School Scam" by Paul Campos that appeared in The Atlantic magazine in September 2014, which highlighted for-profit law schools with dismal consequences.

I am a big fan of all things Grisham. Each book is a reliable companion for a weekend read at the beach, pool or finishing my day. However, I rarely suggest a Grisham title for a Book Club selection, which I reserve for books that need to encompass much more than a great thrilling story.

They need to shake up our preconceptions. Take us to the point of unrest. Encourage us to ask ourselves tough questions that usually begin with… “What would I have done?” Knowing that we ask this question because the answer is not certain.

Well… The Rooster Bar by John Grisham is on my Book Club Favorites list. And, my personal Book Club agrees with me! We are looking forward to a great discussion soon on this book.

Does the story shake up our preconceptions? Yes. Does it take us to the point of unrest? Yes.

And… I found myself constantly on the precipice of both marveling at the characters’ ingenuity and “creative” problem-solving, while simultaneously feeling every cell in my body screaming “you can’t do that… it’s not right!”.

What would I have done? I am really not sure. And, that makes The Rooster Bar a fabulous story in MY book!

What is John Grisham’s most popular book?

John Grisham books are always recommended books in MY book!  However, The Rooster Bar stands out as a legal thriller that resonates deep with the impact of a story that still headlines our national conversation.

I actually listened to this one via audiobook in my car, which was an excellent “reading” experience. Kudos to Ari Fliakos for a fabulous audio narration! (Fun Fact: I actually worked with Ari in acting class years ago at Wynn Handman’s Studio - Carnegie Hall, NYC on scenes from Mourning Becomes Electra by Eugene O’Neill. I had no idea he was the narrator until I started the first disc… And it was super-sweet to once again enjoy his masterful acting skills leading me on this journey… Bravo, Ari!)

The Rooster Bar
By John Grisham

And now, with one semester to go, Mark was staring miserably at the reality of graduating with a combined total, undergrad and law school, principal and interest, of $266,000 in debt.
— from The Rooster Bar by John Grisham

Publisher’s Description:

#1 New York Times bestselling author John Grisham’s legal thriller takes you inside a law firm that’s on shaky ground.

Mark, Todd, and Zola came to law school to change the world, to make it a better place. But now, as third-year students, these close friends realize they have been duped. They all borrowed heavily to attend a third-tier, for-profit law school so mediocre that its’ graduates rarely pass the bar exam, let alone get good jobs. And when they learn that their school is one of a chain owned by a shady New York hedge-fund operator who also happens to own a bank specializing in student loans, the three know they have been caught up in The Great Law School Scam.

But maybe there's a way out. Maybe there’s a way to escape their crushing debt, expose the bank and the scam, and make a few bucks in the process. But to do so, they would first have to quit school. And leaving law school a few short months before graduation would be completely crazy, right?  Well, yes and no . . .

Pull up a stool, grab a cold one, and get ready to spend some time at The Rooster Bar.

The Guardians: A Novel
By John Grisham

Publisher’s Description:

The suspense never rests in John Grisham’s pulse-pounding new legal thriller. The latest novel from the New York Times  #1 bestselling author moves at breakneck speed, delivering some of his most inventive twists and turns yet.

In the small north Florida town of Seabrook, a young lawyer named Keith Russo was shot dead at his desk as he worked late one night. The killer left no clues behind. There were no witnesses, no real suspects, no one with a motive. The police soon settled on Quincy Miller, a young black man who was once a client of Russo’s.

Quincy was framed, convicted, and sent to prison for life. For twenty-two years he languished in prison with no lawyer, no advocate on the outside. Then he wrote a letter to Guardian Ministries, a small innocence group founded by a lawyer/minister named Cullen Post.

Guardian handles only a few innocence cases at a time, and Post is its only investigator. He travels the South fighting wrongful convictions and taking cases no one else will touch. With Quincy Miller, though, he gets far more than he bargained for. Powerful, ruthless people murdered Keith Russo, and they do not want Quincy exonerated.

They killed one lawyer twenty-two years ago, and they will kill another one without a second thought.
