Christmas cookie exchanges are a great way to get together with friends and family, without having to do too much work. Who doesn't love having delicious holiday treats delivered and ready to eat? But hosting another holiday event can be intimidating, especially if you're not used to hosting events. The good news? It doesn't have to be hard or time-consuming.

Here’s how you can host an easy cozy Christmas cookie exchange that is sure to be a hit...

Set the Date and Invite Your Guests

The first step in hosting your holiday cookie exchange is setting the date and inviting your guests.

    • Keep it simple with an e-vite or text message, so you don't have to worry about postage or addressing envelopes.

    • Make sure you give plenty of notice – two weeks should do it – so that everyone has enough time to plan for the event and make their cookies!

    • Keep the pre-event reservations and questions to a minimum by using a group chat or social media group to coordinate everyone's attendance and questions.

      • Encourage attendees to use the search bar in your group chat to easily refer to questions that have already been "asked and answered"... And be sure to include a poll or directory so attendees can report any food allergies, dietary restrictions, etc.

    ♡ T.I.M.E. TIP

A group chat or social media group also provides a super-easy way for everyone to share Christmas cookie exchange recipes after the event is over!

    Prepare Your Home

Next, prep your home for the party!

    • Declutter all surfaces like tables and counters.

    • Make sure you have available cozy seating for all the attendees. This does not have to be around one table! Look for cozy seating options throughout your home... or even outside your home, if your local weather permits.

    • Keep the festive decorations simple with your traditional holiday display and the holiday lights you already have in place. For an extra touch, you could supplement with a few natural cuttings from your yard (if available) to create a cozy atmosphere for your guests...

Check out Lynne's feature below for some holiday decor ideas using natural cuttings…

    • Don't worry about providing all the cookie display platters! Make that part of each attendee's participation.

      • Each person should bring their cookies, including a Christmas cookie tray, cookie platter, basket, etc with a display card that lists the name of the cookie and any special dietary insights (such as "contains nuts", "gluten-free", etc).

    • For you... You don't need to make cookies too! Keep your focus on providing a coffee, tea and/or hot cocoa station.

See these coffee station ideas to get you started.

    • Make sure you have enough plates, napkins, cups, and utensils for everyone so they can enjoy their cookies and coffee, tea or hot cocoa without having to navigate any juggling skills!

    ♡ T.I.M.E. TIP

Provide bakery take-home boxes so each person can create their own "cookie sampler box" from the cookie exchange… Check out these premium bakery boxes HERE.

    Choose Your Cookies

Now comes the fun part — choosing your cookies! To keep things simple, you could go with one of these two Christmas cookie exchange ideas:

    • Choose a "cookie theme" by picking one type of cookie recipe for everyone to make. If possible, try and stick with recipes that only require a few ingredients, like classic chocolate chip cookies (with variations on using chocolate chips or the "chip" of their choice) or sugar cookies (with variations on the toppings). That way your guests can easily opt to make a simple cookie recipe without too much trouble — making the cookie exchange easy for you and your guests too!

    • Or dial the simplicity all the way up and... Freestyle it!... Everyone brings whatever they want of their favorite delicious Christmas cookie recipes.

Hosting a cookie exchange is easier than ever before! With these simple living tips, you can enjoy quality time with friends and family over some tasty goodies without breaking a sweat in preparation. So what are you waiting for? Plan your cozy Christmas cookie exchange today!

Frequently Asked Questions for Hosting A Christmas Cookie Exchange...

    • Welcoming friends and family to exchange homemade Christmas cookies is a time-honored holiday tradition. A cookie exchange is when each attendee brings enough of their own unique treat to share with everyone else. Whether it's classic chocolate chip cookies, cardamom-spiced gingerbread cookies, or your favorite holiday cookies — there's something for everyone!

    • Dessert is always the highlight of any holiday gathering. But hosting a cookie exchange takes that one step further, allowing friends and family to mingle, bond, and have fun while sharing their favorite cookie recipes! Plus, it’s an easy way to make sure everyone gets to try — and take home — new and delicious cookies without having to bake up a huge batch of each recipe on their own. Simplifying everyone's holiday baking!

    • Cookie exchanges are all about giving and sharing, so it’s best to think ahead and prepare a way the cookies can be enjoyed by everyone as a take-home "sampler box" too. Be sure to provide appropriate storage containers for each person to create their own box filled with all of the event's cookies!...

Check out these premium bakery boxes HERE.

    • The rules for a cookie exchange are relatively simple... Each attendee should bring enough of their own special cookie recipe to share with everyone else. I recommend each attendee bring at least two dozen cookies.

People will usually only eat 2 - 3 cookies at the event... The real "prize" is having enough cookies to create full "sampler boxes" for each person to take home. It's also helpful to make sure the cookies are prepared as individual servings so each person can easily select cookies to fill their box.

Hosting an easy cozy Christmas cookie exchange is the perfect way to get in the spirit of the holidays without spending too much time — or even no time — on baking! Invite your friends over, set up your space for everyone — and voila!

You’ll have an enjoyable evening full of delicious treats that will leave all your guests feeling merry and bright this season… And leaving with a full box of homemade Christmas cookies for the rest of the holidays too!

    Merry Christmas!
